The Book of Esther: Part 8 – Enter Haman, the Agagite

“After these events King Ahasuerus promoted Haman, the son of Hammedatha the Agagite,” – Esther 3:1

The final player of our story comes into view in verse 1. His name is Haman, which in Hebrew means to rage, to be turbulent.

This man has a “promotion”, or in Hebrew, he grew and “became great” with the king. So much so that he was in charge of the princes of the king’s territory.

But who does this person represent?

We’ve seen King Ahasuerus, the unsaved man; Queen Esther, the Life of Christ, and Mordecai, the Holy Spirit.

To understand who or rather what Haman represents we must do a little research.

The Bible tells us that Haman was an Agagite, meaning he was from the line of Agag. Agag was the king of the Amalekites (1 Samuel 15:1-9).

And who are the Amalekites?

Their history is traced back to a man we find in Genesis 36. Let’s read verse 1, “These are the generations of Esau (that is Edom) … (now verse 12) And Timna was a concubine of Esau’s son Eliphaz and she bore Amalek.

Amalek is Esau’s grandson.

Now, when you follow the spiritual type for Esau you find that he was the one in Genesis 25:19-34 as the son who, “…despised his birthright.”

Esau was at odds with his brother Jacob, who would become Israel.

Esau represents a part of a person that remains unregenerate. Remember that Esau and Jacob were twins. Jacob would be renewed and changed; Esau would remain a stickler to his brother.

Therefore, Esau represents the part of you that is at odds with God.

Esau represents the flesh within you (remember the ‘twin’). The part that remains from your old nature.

As Esau is a picture of the flesh, anything that comes from him would be of the same make, fleshly.

So, Esau’s son Eliphaz represents the flesh.

Amalek represents the flesh.

Agag represents the flesh.

HAMAN represents the flesh!

Look at the entire picture that we have now. Every part of you is encapsulated in the first three chapters of Esther. You have you, your new life in Christ, the Holy Spirit, and the flesh.

What a picture!

And as we will continue to see in our story, Haman will cause all sorts of problems!

He will be at odds with Mordecai!

Is not the flesh against the spirit?! YES! Galatians 5:17!

Now do you see! The wrong man is in (Haman) and the right man is out (Mordecai) of the king’s presence.

What will unfold is how the change takes place and how LITTLE King Ahasuerus has to do with it!
